  • Did you know? We just hit publish on the 2020 Koh Samui Events Calendar. It's ready for anyone clever enough to plan things in advance (and always here for those of us who show up and hope for the best). Just like every year since 2008 (!!!), we keep it updated throughout the year so it's great to bookmark and refer to when needed. Enjoy!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Calling all Samui hotels and businesses! We’re often asked, “How can I get in The Koh Samui Guide?” ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Answer: We don’t accept advertising or sponsorship for anything based on Samui. We always visit the places we recommend in The Koh Samui Guide as anonymous, paying guests.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That said, if you have any information about how your business is extra special or has environmentally-friendly aspects – we want to know! More specifically, any “insider info” like chef specialties, your favourite view/room, how or why you got started, how you make Samui a better place, anything behind-the-scenes that makes your baby “the best of the best” – this kind of detail really rewards our readers who take the time to do extra research. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Send anything our way (by DM or email) or tag us in your posts. Look forward to hearing from you with anything you'd like to share. Thanks!⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Our “Samui Specific Sponsorship policy” leaves our moral code wide open to accept worldwide transport, Taylor Swift-style, from an airline with rooms, full beds, showers and so on. Any day now. Annyyyy day now). ✈️⁣

  • What’s the best makeup for Thailand? Taking “less is more” as your perpetual adage for makeup in tropical weather, here are my best tips, one product at a time:⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
https://www.kohsamuisunset.com/best-makeup-thailand/⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Note: Cruelty-free, totally natural & tested myself! 🐰👍⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every product listed is 100% cruelty-free (no animal testing). I’ve tried them nearly all of them personally, bought myself as a normal customer – no freebies – during the hottest weather I’ve ever known on Koh Samui.⁣

  • Our blog turned eleven years old last month! If you're struggling with that time-travel – it's as old as Twilight I, Taken I, Mamma Mia I, and everyone's favourite "elective death by jellyfish" movie, Seven Pounds. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Want further retrospective? Here's how The Koh Samui Guide got started...⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A: More or less by total fluke. In 2008 I had no idea how to make a website, but had a new Macbook and – web designers will cringe – iWeb looked interesting. The blog started with two posts: What to pack, and what to wear in Thailand.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had got this horribly wrong on my first visit to Thailand and thought it might help other travellers. The blog really took off a year or so later, after writing a story about watching a grandmother changing into her swimsuit in a Samui restaurant.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thought I could offer some cross-cultural survival tips to keep granny-bits out of all future lunches. You can’t un-see stuff like that. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Koh Samui Guide followed in 2012 – an island guide book to save other travellers from that overwhelming cycle of travel research and stressful prep. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d often see visitors looking miserable on Samui – perhaps walking somewhere on a dangerous piece of road, or realising they’d arrived in rainy season – and I thought, “this could be the best vacation you’ve ever had!”⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I commandeered my parents’ dining table for two months and put the first draft of The Koh Samui Guide together from about 5,000 pieces of scribbled notes and torn-out magazine articles (old school Pinterest).⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After seven editions it’s doubled in size and now has a really comprehensive safety section (because that's what happens when you get older – everything looks like it might kill you). ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I never imagined this would become my full-time job, but I guess ⁣most Millennials say the same.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
TL/DR? Seven Pounds was a terrible movie. iWeb induces fond but misplaced nostalgia. Naked grandmas can launch careers you didn't intend to have.
