Meliá Koh Samui

Just opened
Old-time Samui visitors will remember The Imperial Boat House in Choeng Mon, which closed in perhaps eighteen months ago for a total rebranding and renewal. Just opened in its stead is Meliá Koh Samui – doors literally installed and opened last week.

Sticking with its Boat House roots, Meliá has retained the original boathouses and added “nautical-themed luxury” throughout. A favourite aspect on an early visit? Blue and white striped beach cushions, and easily a million coconut trees. The new hotel has 159 rooms and 41 suites, plus tons of brand new facilities for both families and large events. (Planning a wedding? Consider Meliá’s 200-person ballroom or poolside space for up to 500).

A redesign of the original boat-shaped pool now makes more use of the area – beachfront pool 2.0 features a mini water park and lots of shallow-entry spots for lounging. There’s also a 24-hour gym and a kids’ club.

Room tip: Don’t miss the boat suites – totally updated from the original boathouses in much brighter and airy tones. A favourite feature of these suites? Trampoline-style loungers built into the second-floor balcony. Another option? Pool Access rooms that open directly on to Meliá’s lazy river.

La Vida Samui

Just opened
Don’t miss La Vida’s pre-opening offers available through March 31st! Just opened on a gorgeous stretch of beach in northern Chaweng, La Vida Samui will make ‘Plant People’, beach people (indeed most people) happy. Rooms are rich in tropical, floral motifs with a clean, modern look. With 49 rooms it’s a nice mid-size hotel where you’re sure to get to know the staff (and life tends to get better the more Thai friends you make). Features I really like? The bedroom design. Beachfront location. Glass bottles instead of plastic. Tents provide tons of needed shade around the pool. Note: If you’re coming for Samui Regatta in May, note that La Vida’s parent hotel is Synergy Samui – the host of this year’s race. Expect good rates and a good time!

Room tip: The Beachfront Pool Villa is slightly separated from the main hotel and has its own dip pool, right on Chaweng Beach.

Centara Grand Beach Resort

Major renovation – reopening 2020
Centara Grand Beach Resort fully closed for major renovations in mid-2019 and remains a hive of hard-hatted activity at the time of writing. No exact reopening date has been announced just a vague “mid-2020”. I really liked the colonial style of this property and can’t wait to see it when it’s finished. With 203 rooms, it’s not only one of the biggest hotels on Chaweng Beach but also amongst the oldest – it opened in 1996 (back in the ‘bamboo beach bungalow’ hey-day). If your Samui travels are planned for sometime later in the year and you love a big resort with a variety of pools, restaurants and beach bar options – keep this one on your list of maybes. “Mystery” hotel on Choeng Mon Beach

Koh Samui new hotels in 2020: “Mystery” hotel on Choeng Mon Beach – JW Marriott? The Standard Hotel Samui? Unbound Collection by Hyatt?
SALA Samui Choeng Mon (pictured) is finally getting a neighbour (photo credit: Booking.com)

… No idea
This is becoming my life’s quest. After perhaps ten years (just guessing but it seems like a long time) of sitting as an abandoned construction site, the far corner of Choeng Mon Beach is finally getting a completed hotel. But what is it? Until I hire private investigators (and I might), I have no idea.

My sleuthing so far: The construction company has worked previously with some big-name brands including Dusit and JW Marriott … and other sources confirm that it will be a luxury (five-star) property. There’s no Dusit on Samui so far, however, Marriott has a big Samui presence with The Ritz-Carlton, W Koh Samui, Sheraton Samui, Le Meridien, and Renaissance Samui so … maybe???

Other possibilities include The Standard Hotel Samui (due to open somewhere on Samui in the next year). One day soon a PR firm will email me the press release I’m waiting for and tell me how wrong I am. Until then, these are my guesses.

At any rate, sources suggest the hotel is set for a Q1 2020 opening so we should expect the mystery to be solved soon. In general, I think this is great news for Choeng Mon as it’s been in a redevelopment phase for the past year. With Cape Fahn and SALA Samui Choeng Mon as stunning bookends, and Meliá Koh Samui now open, another option will hopefully mean good things for one of my favourite beaches.

Hyatt Regency Koh Samui

Drone shots show at least two pools, seven or more oceanfront villas and variety of other oceanview room blocks set on the hills above. No opening date yet – though job postings are currently out so perhaps it won’t be long. Stay tuned!
