If your skin gets uncomfortable in Thailand's hot climate, pick up prickly heat powder. This magic fix is found at any island chemist. It’s just the trick. (See our Thailand packing checklist for toiletries to bring).

Hit the high street in Chaweng or Fishermen's Village for all sorts of Thai goodies, cheap knock-offs and DVDs. (Official word is that the government is clamping down on this trade... time will tell).

Opticians such as Top Charoen are on every corner of the island. The best bit? You can bargain for your beloved’s new pair of Ray Bann’s
