May on Samui gets an average of 215 hours of sun. That’s almost 7 hours a day – sound good? I think so. As well, May is pretty quiet compared to mid-to-late June and July/August when families arrive for holidays with school-aged children.

Year-to-year, Koh Samui’s tourist numbers fluctuate – often when another country’s exchange rate changes to make a destination like Thailand more expensive.

(1) Children in the UK, Australia, the States and Canada (and much of the rest of the world) are in school in May.
(2) You can always find peace and quiet somewhere on Koh Samui, no matter the month.

Expect temperatures anywhere between 28-35 degrees Celsius (that’s 82-95 Fahrenheit) – perhaps with the occasional shower.

Given the long days and promise of gorgeous sunshine, it’s a great time of year to visit Ang Thong Marine Park and try to a huge variety of watersports.
So, in addition to the things on my recommended Thailand packing list, make sure you bring cover-ups for the sun and quality sunscreen for the water. Consider Sun Bum and a UPF rash guard – ideal to wear when snorkelling or kayaking.

13. Koh Samui events in May?
May 1: Labour Day. Expect banks & many shops to be closed.
May 20 (through May 27): The Samui Regatta is the island’s biggest event each May. Enjoy racing by day and parties by night. If not sailing yourself, you can watch the action from the shore – Centara Grand Beach Resort on Chaweng beach is the event’s HQ and its Coast Beach Club is no hardship.
