Bangkok Airways flights to Koh Samui – things to know

Bangkok Airways – lots to love.

This fab airline should feature in your Samui itinerary. Why? Find any award with the words “boutique”, “best”, Asia” and “airline” in its title and Bangkok Airways has got it in the bag. They’ve been voted Asia’s best airline annually since 2004.

Apparently, flying doesn’t have to suck. Where airlines’ tightened budgets have meant the decade-long demise of “thoughtful extras”, Bangkok Airways comes through as top in class. Despite just an hour’s flying time from Bangkok to Samui, Bangkok Airways will feed you and you’ll probably want to eat it (United, Northwest, Air Canada….we’re thinking bad things about you).

A few things to know:

  1. Join their frequent flyer programme for immediate reward. Sign up online and print their card to all but guarantee preferential check-in service (without having flown a mile). Membership is good immunity where flights are over-subscribed and affords you greater luggage allowance.
  2. Through 2009 the airline is offering bonus points for any flight taken during your birthday month. Did we mention Samui’s a great place to celebrate?
  3. Don’t miss the lounge at BKK, just opposite the boarding gate. Open for all Bangkok Airways passengers (yes, even economy class), it offers light snacks, coffee and free internet.
  4. Luggage allowance: 20 kilos per adult or child, 10 kilos per infant, 30 kilos for frequent flyer members.
  5. One note of caution: these are typically very small planes. If you’re flying long haul with large carry-on baggage, you and the flight staff might need a bit of creativity in stowing it.
  6. Have your sunglasses and camera ready on landing. You’ll be whisked from plane to baggage claim on the airport’s colourful trolleys – a perfectly tropical segue from real world to relaxing holiday.
  7. After claiming your baggage you can be poolside at our villa, cocktail in hand, in under 10 minutes. Now that’s jet-set.

  1. Good post. Could you perhaps add some information on likely check-in times for travellers on the way out of USM?

  2. That’s a good idea. Early morning flights will require you to be there about an hour before departure. It doesn’t take that long to check in, but Bangkok Airways may give your seats away if you leave it too late. Add another half an hour for busier times of the day simply because there are more people flying out. Does that help?
