This week we undertook a scientific research project very near to our hearts: the best coconut shake on Choeng Mon beach. Happily, the judges took to the challenge with gusto.
The results:
Crystal Restaurant: it’s just thick enough, just cold enough
Runners-up:
Choeng Mon Bungalows: it comes in a coconut so wins for aesthetic best. Not as thick as [...]

We’ve covered this restaurant earlier in our Samui top 5 (our vote for best beach restaurant), but a recent visit required a dedicated review.
This is a true Samui restaurant, a roadside gem that belies none of its waiting charm. Fact is, you’d probably drive right past on your way to somewhere with an English sign [...]

Somewhere between the first and second sip of a Samui pineapple shake, a vow is made. “I will never eat canned pineapple again.” Much like a faked orange tan, the canned stuff is a waste of money and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. A poor imitation.
Still, the whole fruit comes with a few [...]

This book picks up where the Lonely Planet intro leaves off. It covers the whos, the hows, the whats and the whys of Thailand in a very readable manner. You can easily skim this in one sitting, emerging much the wiser. The book’s most important topic is face (and how to save it). While [...]

Becoming one with statistic, we caught nasty colds on a recent flight. Though sniffling and coughing when it’s 30 degrees seems odd, the afflicted can combat their germs with a Thai weapon sure to deliver: a spicy curry. The heat of a Thai curry travels directly to your sinuses and will quickly clear your head [...]

Armed and ready with webcams and noise-cancelling headphones, this is a perfect place to show off your tan to Skyping friends and family at home.
The Living Room is a dedicated internet café, unlike Samui’s many car rental/tour agency/laundry/internet jobs. Our 3 reasons for recommending it:
It’s air conditioned. We’re not wimps exactly, but online banking [...]

Call it a baby shower. Though not quite ready for its world debut, our villa was getting so handsome the proud parents (and expectant aunties and uncles) thought it needed a little toast. Good friends were duly summoned for a patio party of sangria and home made brownies. Not a traditional Thai menu but tasty [...]

The abusive owner of a monkey called Brother Kwan often forced him to pick coconuts from tall palms. As it turns out, Brother Kwan didn’t like climbing trees. The irked animal dropped a coconut 15 metres on to the man’s head, killing him instantly.
The Samui Express has the full story.
It’s often cited that falling coconuts kill 150 [...]

[Update Mar 8, 2010: Mr. Bee's car agency has now closed. However, a number of other Samui car hire agencies can be found in Choeng Mon high street, and across the island if staying elsewhere].
We’re in the business of recommending quality service from people we trust - no commissions or kickbacks, just lots of good karma.
